Bed Clothes

These are bedclothes made wide enough to cover one’s body while sleeping. It is made of fabric or textiles, and can be classified into cotton-padded bedclothes, multi-layered bedclothes, and single-layered bedclothes. The cover was tacked down to prevent it from shifting over the surface. The fabric used for its production varied depending on the season. Its color was determined by gender: cool colors were used for men, while vibrant and beautiful colors were used for women. A white flange was attached and cotton fillers were used for both men’s and women’s beddings. The bedclothes shown here use navy cloth on the surface, and adds a wide red strip on the upper part. It was generally considered that the color red had the power to ward off misfortunes and evil, as well as the strength to provide vitality.
