This "metate" may have served dual ritualistic functions, as a grinding stone for ceremonial food and a throne for an important leader. Motifs carved into the base of it includes a pelican, jaguar, and trophy head, all of which have associations with the religion and politics of the region. It is constructed from a single piece of basalt which could have required a highly skilled artist.
