The first department stores opened during the early eighteenth century with Bennett’s of Ironside opening in Derby in 1734. For the first time customers could purchase a whole host of consumer goods under one roof. This elegant leather clutch was sold in Swan & Edgar, a department store located in Piccadilly Circus, London.
