Console

Anonymous Italian, Lombard workshopThird quarter of  the 18th century

Sforzesco Castle

Sforzesco Castle
Milan, Italy

The decorative motif represents volutes that, intertwining, form
the support of the marble top and frame a romantic scene carved in the round. This decorative motif is inspired by German
rocaille models, disseminated in collections of engravings by François
Cuvillies
, by Franz Xaver Habermann and by Johann Micheal Hoppenpaupt II and by
the Louis XV style decorations of Benedetto Alfieri who was summoned to Milan
to complete the facade towards the garden of the villa. The style and quality of the carvings link
this console table with the wooden decorations of the Hall of Mirrors of
Palazzo Litta, and with those of Palazzo Visconti di Saliceto in Cernusco sul
Naviglio and of Palazzo Clerici.
