A picture of extreme visual synthesis, but full of emotions for which a closed form (village or castle?) with four lateral bell towers (cusped towers?) to define its limits is placed in the distance between an intensely blue sky furrowed by pink streaks and a vast field in the foreground of ripe brightly colored wheat. Next to the castle a slight hill with thick vegetation. Between the two areas as a connecting element there is a small church seen from the side with a soaring bell tower. In so much apparent brightness, however there are zones of shadow and clustering of areas of darkness in a passing through of atmospheres all resolved on parallel planes, here intensely enlivened by the bright and exalted colors and by the nervous and material brushstrokes that quickly and safely delimit the chromatic bands, without any need for drawing definition.
The work thus shows an extended spatiality of view and the landscape itself becomes a narrative element, in an ascent that leads to the fortified village, the forest and the expanse of the sky, starting from the existential concreteness of the wheat field and the sense that this gives of a hot hour of summer, for which each element is played with and on the emotions that the view suggests, thus arriving at a subtle and captivating poem, which for the invention of the distant castle/village, immersed in the air, draws on the dream, to the fairy tale, to a reverie without concrete and real references.
The construction in horizontal planes is quite typical of Ligabue and, here, as elsewhere however he feels, in degrading towards the "distance". the need to connect and visually unite the various floors for which he inserts the isolated church in a central position, which becomes a chromatic focus of union and rest of the gaze together.
