After his graduation from Darmstadt Music Academy, Ludwig Gosewitz studied music history, German literature, and philosophy at Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Marburg Philipps Universities. As part of his quest to map out the German language, he experimented with visual and concrete poetry. Joining the ranks of Fluxus artists in 1962, he participated in several festivals and exhibitions organised by the movement. The artist worked with a wide a range of media, including drawing, mixed material, graphics, and various objects.
In the 1960s, in collaboration with Tomas Schmit, Ludwig Gosewitz focused on creating graphical and visual forms resembling astrological diagrams and circular constellations. "Large Inversion with Shipwrecked" is one of the works the artist produced during this period. Spurred by his interest and studies in astrology, the artist creates his works with the help of a ruler and compass, which he then colours, thereby transforming the data depicting the locations and movements of celestial bodies into abstract and geometric watercolours.
