This photograph is a portrait of Christo Coetzee by the French photographer and art critic Michel Tapié de Céleyran (1909-1987) taken in Osaka in 1959. In 1959 the South African artist Christo Coetzee went to Tokyo Japan on an art scholarship arranged by Michel Tapié. As part of the scholarship Coetzee worked with the Gutai Group, which worked in Art Informel and performance art. The photograph is part of one of Coetzee’s performance art pieces’
