The Treaty of Utrecht was signed between 1713 and 1715, putting an end to the War of the Spanish Succession, which had been triggered by the dispute between the Bourbons and the Hapsburgs over the Spanish throne. The conflict saw the supporters of Philip V, who was backed by Spain, France, and other associated countries, engaged in a war against the supporters of Archduke Charles of Austria, which included the Holy Roman Empire, England, Prussia, the Dutch Republic, and most of the German states. The war ended in favor of the former. However, Philip V lost his claim to the French crown and Spain lost all of its European possessions. In addition, Gibraltar and Menorca remained under English command.

This medal, struck in England, commemorates the signing of the treaty. On the obverse is a bust of Queen Anne in Roman dress, recognizing her as Queen of England in the peace negotiations. The image is encircled by an inscription that reads: "ANNA . DG. MAG : BRI FR: ET . HIB : REG." (Anne, by the Grace of God, Queen of Great Britain, France, and Ireland). The engraver's mark appears below: "J. C." (John Croker).

On the back is an allegorical image of Britannia, represented as Pallas, holding a spear and a circular shield in her left hand, and an olive branch in her right hand. The medal also depicts some warships and some farmers in a field. The image is encircled by an inscription in Latin that reads: "Horacio: COMPOSITIS . VENERANTUR . ARMIS" (They honor those who put an end to the war). The line stops at the exergue, which bears the date it was struck in Roman numerals: MDCCXIII (1713).
