Every lecture and every seminar turned into a grandiose dramatic presentation, a theatrical act, a dispute in the form of a Socratic dialogue that led to a climax—the solution to staging a scene. Eisenstein planned to rework the 548 hours of his course —192 hours of lecture and 356 of practical work—into the book Film Direction. He chose scenes from Dostoevsky’s "Crime and Punishment" and Leskov’s "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" in which domestic violence plays itself out in cramped rooms.
