In the era of the Zangid dynasty, they took care of the mosque, and of all the facilities in the city. They renewed its architecture in 543 AH / 1149 AD by Saif ad-Din Ghazi, son of Imad Al-Din Zangi. The mosque, at that time, was called the ancient mosque, as a name to distinguish it from the new mosque – Al-Nuri Mosque. Presently, the mosque is quite small; only Friday prayers are held.
