This work is a part of a series of nocturnes, which form a prominent portion of the heritage of this artist from the Warsaw’s Pro Art group. In these night-time landscapes, the painter placed strong emphasis on the light sources — typically the moon. In this case, it is the lamp standing next to the market, which brings forth other objects with its luminosity. It is near the well, by the entry point into the Lubelska Street. The lamp illuminating the market appeared in Kazimierz in the 1920s. It was not received very well — it was said that the evening charm of Kazimierz, illuminated only by the light of Shabbat candles in the windows, had disappeared. The painting also features brightly lit windows. The artist did not focus on details; instead, he captured the subtle hues of objects immersed in the darkness of the night. Signed in the bottom right-hand corner: Ste. Popowski 1929
