The Stolen Paradise

West 82010

MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts

MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts
Rome, Italy

The Dutch office West 8 is a group of professionals that brings together different experiences and varying disciplines, from urban planning to industrial design, from the world of Land Art to architectural construction. The installation "The Stolen Paradise" was presented at the MAXXI as part of the exhibition "Spazio" (2010). It occupied a portion of one of the Museum’s galleries with fluctuating silhouettes of maritime pines and part of the outdoor plaza with stylised versions of their cut trunks. The silhouettes of the trees were so light that they moved in the slightest breeze, recalling their natural counterparts, identified with the Italian coast and linked with the trunks outside. The installation is an invitation to reflect on the visible and invisible component of objects, on the evident and the mysterious. It is almost a suggestion that what appears dead may in reality conceal something else that goes on living elsewhere.
