Epergnes were used as elaborate table centerpieces during the 19th century and held fruit, flowers and nuts. This example was given to Madge Gates and David Wallace, Bess Truman's parents as a wedding gift from the groomsmen. Engraved with the couples' initials "GW" and their wedding date, June 13, 1883. Manufactured by Wilcox Silver Plate Co.
