Stone Constellation Chart

Joseon Dynasty

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea

This is an astronomical chart carved on stone. The stone chart was made after the first king of Joseon, Yi Seong-gye ascended the throne. It was to claim that Joseon was founded upon Heaven’s will and to publically announce his determination to follow the divine order devoutly. Upon King Taejo’s order, astronomers at the Office of Astronomy and Geomancy created this astronomical chart in 1395, by newly measuring the locations of constellations of that time. The chart was based on the rubbed copy of 'Celestial Planisphere Carved on a Stone Slab' which had disappeared in the Pyeongyang Magistracy.
