President Lincoln presided over the opening ceremonies of the Maryland State Fair for U.S. Soldier Relief—the Baltimore Sanitary Fair—on April 18, 1864. In its two week run the Fair raised over eighty-three thousand dollars for the U.S. Sanitary and U.S. Christian commissions, the two major Northern relief organizations that coordinated women’s volunteer work during the Civil War, setting up hospitals, raising funds for supplies, and promoting clean and healthy conditions in Union army camps.
