BEBC building after wind gusts

1974

CERN

CERN
Geneva, Switzerland

Because of the potential explosive dangers of large volumes of hydrogen, bubble chamber buildings were of specially light construction. The fierce winds of 6 February (gusting up to 130 km/h) took advantage of this and stripped away large sections of the building housing the 3.7 m European bubble chamber, BEBC. Fortunately, apart from the building, very little damage was caused.
