The anniversary of the 1808 Abolition of the Slave Trade was an important occasion for annual commemorations within free black communities. This sermon, delivered in 1818 on the tenth anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade, was presented to and published by the African Society, one of the earliest social and community aid organizations founded within the Boston black community, dating to 1796. Reverend Thomas Gray was a guest minister for the occasion as he was affiliated with the Church of Christ in Jamaica Plain.
