Martinson went missing in action in a 22 November 1914 battle near Regotsina, Galicia while fighting against Austrian and German forces. His family (wife Liiso and son Meinhard) received support from the state starting on 1 June 1915. Such notices were compiled for the head committee by the county military commander on a set form. The Aleksei head committee had taken custody of war orphans and children of war invalids, already during the Russo-Japanese War.
