A common type of board game, at the end of the nineteenth century, reflected a common type of literature from that period. The works of Horatio Alger held a wide influence, especially amoung young boys. These were "rags to riches" tales designed to inspire boys to do good works and thereby gain rewards. And several manufacturers designed board games with similar themes. In "The Game of Success" players begin as boys but rise through the ranks to finally win as the "editor."
