Palki (Palanquin)

This intricately decorated palanquin known as Palki belonged to a noble family in the north western India’s Rajasthan province. It has decorative floral motifs placed in square boxes on the outer surface, and has poles on either side which are reinforced with iron rods. This Palki rooftop is also represents intricate art.

Such palanquins adorned with intricate lacquer paintwork were a popular means of travel for royal, elite and noble ladies during the 18-19th Century. These were carried to their destinations on the shoulders of strong young men. The Palki bearers had varied nomenclatures according to regions e.g. Dulias, Rawani, Kahars.
