Part of ISOLDE — Isotope Separator On-Line. At the control desk the proton beam from the SC could be monitored and the performance of the target and separator controlled. The ion beam containing the isotopes entered through the wall and was analysed in the magnet. One of the analysed beams could then be transported to the detectors — the ions were transmitted with close to 100 % efficiency. At the end of the pipe, on the right, was a tape system for collecting the isotopes. The isotopes became embedded in the tape and detectors could be brought to the tape for measurements (an electron detector, above, and a gamma detector, below, could be brought into position). A system was being developed to make it possible to switch the ion beam to three users. This was about to increase the number of experiments which could be performed simultaneously with ISOLDE.
