A Kalamkari Temple Hanging

A large painted Kalamkari textile designed for hanging in Hindu temples during religious festivals: this depicts the deity Sri Venugopala Swamy, who is the form of Krishna playing the flute, surrounded by the Gopis (cow-herd girls) and the Gopas (cow-herd boys) by the Yamuna riverside. The surrounding scene depicts a herd of cows and a flock of birds. The large borders are painted with motifs of peacock and floral designs which are typical to the Kalamkari style of painting.
