Dhranio, Coverlet

Sanskriti Museums
New Delhi, India

This is a cover, placed over a pile of mattresses when stacked, typically used by the farmers and nomads of Gujarat. One end has been left plain to allow the cloth to be securely tucked behind the mattresses. This textile has been worked in such a way that the negative or left-out space of the white ground itself forms a design motif. The interlacing stitch shared with Sindhi is extensively used. Mineral use of mirror pieces and the prominent white sunburst motifs lend the piece a luminosity rarely seen in Indian embroidery.
