1930s Fireplace, Eltham Palace

United Kingdom

The classically, 1930s fireplace is located in the dining room. It was designed by the Italian designer, Peter Malacrida, and exemplifies the geometrical or stylised shapes of the earlier Art Noveau. The fireplace consists of polished, ribbed aluminium panels surrounding the original electric fireplace, which still retains its imitation logs illuminated by electric bulbs. It has a black, Belgian marble surround inlaid with a Greek key pattern in mica. This pattern repeated on the ebonised doors was often used in the 1930s.
