Canopy or Wall Hanging

Sanskriti Museums

Sanskriti Museums
New Delhi, India

Elaborately embroidered canopy apparently comes from a Vaishnava shrine or a Vaishnava household. The floral motifs in the borders and the central medallion have a definite kinship with the embroidery of the Ahir cattle herders of Kutch. On the other hand, the rendering of raas, the circle dance of Krishna and his milkmaid companions appears to be a highly individualistic work of a person within the Ahir community. The netting effect created in the limbs and costumes of the figures, with open chain stitch too appears to be individualistic.
