The Woman's Era

The Woman's Era magazine was founded and edited by Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, beginning in 1890. It was the first periodical published by and for African American women. In 1894, Ruffin established the Woman's Era Club, which took its name from the magazine. This June 1896 issue includes an article by writer and women's rights activist Victoria Earle Matthews on efforts to bring Harriet Tubman (then age 80) before the "young generation" for inspiration for the continued work to be done.
