Spirit rover reached out its arm to meet up with the Martian soil for the first time. Its Microscopic Imager, one of four instruments at the end of the rover's arm, took the highest resolution image of the surface of Mars to date. Throughout the mission, this instrument will act as a geologist's hand lens, providing close up views of rocks and soils. 16 Jan. 2004. US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY/JPL-NASA
