The photograph depicts a metal worker throwing a 1790s hot cake griddle into an incinerator for melting, which was later molded into a 75mm armor piercing shell. The owner of the griddle, Mrs. Margaret Dodson of Trucksville, Pennsylvania, pictured on the right, donated the item to support the war effort during the early stages of World War II. Across the country, Americans donated vast amounts of metals to aid in the overall war effort to create machineries, weapons, and ammunition.
