An official poster advertising the 1st FIFA World Championship for Women's Football in Guangdong, China.

The tournament was played in mid-November, and featured twelve teams from six confederations. Amongst them were the United States, who would go on to lift the trophy after a 2-1 victory over Norway. In doing so, they avenged their defeat at the hands of the Norwegians in the quarter-final of a FIFA invitational tournament three years earlier, when the young US team was edged out by a single goal in Panyu.

The poster is signed by a host of World Cup winners, including Joy Fawcett, Julie Foudy, Linda Hamilton, Kristine Lilly, captain April Heinrichs, and a young prospect by the name of Mia Hamm.
