Nanshan Museum
Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China

This round box is made of tortoiseshell. The band along the edge of the lid is incised with foliage, while the center vividly depicts the story Zhao Jun Goes Beyond the Frontier (Zhao Jun Chu Sai); the underside of the box is carved with figures in a courtly garden, using shallower relief than that on the lid. The underside of similar boxes is mostly plain, whereas the entire surface of this box is carved, showing its unique craftsmanship.
