GREENHOUSE FOR CULTIVATION IN THE URBAN AND PERI-URBAN ENVIRONMENT
PISA, MILAN

Jellyfish Barge (JFB) is a floating modular greenhouse for crop cultivation, capable of generating the water and energy it needs by using solar power alone. It is designed to promote urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) both in developed and developing countries. At present, UPA provides a livelihood for over 800 million people, but as cities grow, the demand for food increases, and agriculture has to compete with other activities for access to water and land. JFB can grow vegetables without impacting existing water and energy resources and without consuming land. It is a new kind of infrastructure combining food production with a public space directly accessible by citizens, and is also capable of hosting educational spaces and small marketplaces. JFB can be a driver of change for many post-industrial cities where there are large abandoned dock areas, revitalizing waterfronts and promoting the regeneration of the built environment through social and economic innovation.
