Two Spaces 3 (2000) by LEE Jaekyung(1974- ) uses the medium of “tapestry” for a hyperrealistic depiction of wisps of smoke. Here the title, “Two Spaces” makes reference to the physical space of the tapestry work and the illusory one built by the strands of smoke. An ironic effect is generated through the combination of the regularity of the grain of fabric and the protean movement of smoke. What Lee intends here is to challenge the conventional idea of tapestry that the relation between pattern and fabric ought to be of harmony.
