The submitter's parents, Yehezkiel and Tova "Tony" Horowicz, were born in Poland. In 1933 they moved to Vienna, Austria, where two children, Rivka (the submitter) and Moshe, were born. In December 1938 they fled from Austria to Antwerp, Belgium, and in May 1940 to the south of France. They were arrested and transferred to the Rivesaltes camp. The Red Cross effected the release of the children, who went into hiding near the Swiss border. The parents reached the city of Lyons, where the father was detained in the St. Paul prison. The mother succeeded in joining the children in their hide-out, whereas the father was sent to the Drancy camp and from there to Majdanek, where he was killed in 1943.
