The George Washington postcard rate definitive stamp was first issued in a 20-cent denomination on February 22, 2001. The stamp eventually became available in numerous formats (coils, panes, booklets; self-stick and water-activated adhesives) produced by several different printing firms. The stamp was designed and illustrated by Richard Sheaff of Scottsdale, Arizona. The stamp art is based on a black and white photograph of a bust of George Washington by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The bust — which is signed and dated 1785 — is on display at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia.
