Ethel Merman (1908-1984), a self-taught singer, was the Queen of Broadway for thirty years. Merman became an overnight success in her debut performance in Gershwin's "Girl Crazy," singing "I Got Rhythm." From then on, her fresh, high-volume style made her a pop music legend. She was the favored performer for many of the major songwriters of the period, including Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin.
