This statue is a copy of a famous marble statue created between 1817 and 1820 by the Italian Neoclassical sculptor, Antonio Canova, for Sir Thomas Hope. It represents Aphrodite/Venus being surprised at the moment of rising from her bath. She covers her right breast with her left hand and with her right hand pulls a garment over her pubic area. Her left knee is bent and her head is turned to the left. The statue is carved from Carrara marble. The surface has been roughened by weather and repolished by the Conservation Department.
