No other industrial area had as many workers living in their own home than the area around the pits in the Saar region. The steel engravings from 1880 show plans for constructing miner houses for families in Sulzbach and Altenwald. These premium houses were constructed in accordance with a specific Saarland construction type and were built from 1842 to 1918. The low-cost loans enabled many miners to build their own home. This was initially a means of attracting the workers that were urgently needed to the region and to then help them settle permanently by ensuring they owned their own home. There are different types of the premium house which was made increasingly spacious and larger during its 76-year lifespan. The plans from 1880 show three to four-axle variants with an enhanced upper floor.
