32c "Nighthawks" stamp

Edward Hopper (1882-1967) ranks as one of the outstanding 20th century realists. Using stark light and expressionless individuals, as in “Nighthawks”, 1942, he came to represent something of modern alienation.

This stamp was one of the "Four Centuries of American Art" commemorative stamps issued on August 27, 1998, in Santa Clara, California. The pane features twenty American paintings. An inscription on the back of each stamp describes the painting and artist.
