The 8-cent John Sloan postage stamp, tenth in the American Painting Series, was first placed on sale at Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, on August 2, 1971.

The stamp was issued to honor American painter John Sloan (1871-1951). Sloan's painting "The Wake of the Ferry II" is reproduced on the stamp. The painting currently hangs in the Phillips Gallery in Washington, DC.

Robert J. Jones and Bradbury Thompson designed the stamp. It was issued in sheets of fifty, with an initial printing of 130 million.
