This book of dye recipes for printed cottons was used at Catterall, Lancashire, between February and December 1824. The firm producing these cottons is likely to have been Henry Fielding Bros, one of the leading printers of high-class dress fabrics at the time. The four brothers Henry, Benjamin, Joseph and Jeremiah Fielding took on this name for their firm after the previous partnership at Catterall of Watson, Myers, Fielding & Co was dissolved in 1799. They were in business until 1830.
Among the samples are a number in the rainbow style, newly fashionable in the 1820s, one inscribed "these were the First Rainbows done at Catterall".
