"BACK AXLE" GIRLS
E.M./FM.
So many male employees of Carter Paterson are now serving with the forces, that women are being employed to undertake many of the heavy manual jobs. The "Back Axle" girls is the name given to these women who are doing all the repair work on the lorries; at the repair shop at Stepney Green, a dozen of these women - some of whom are married - tackle all the essential work on the heavy transport vehicles.
Photo shows: Mrs. M. Willkins who specialised in making baby robes, is seen grinding in valves.
