First quadrupole magnet for SPS

A quadrupole magnet of the 400 GeV proton synchrotron being lowered into place in the machine tunnel on Monday 21 October. It was the first of the thousand magnets of the SPS that were installed. The hydraulically operated device on the left lowers the magnet onto its support stands. Watching the operation (photo 287), third from the left, is J.B. Adams, Director General of CERN Laboratory II.
