A West Indian manatee skeleton

Scientific name: Trichechus manatus

In 1493 explorer Christopher Columbus reported seeing three mermaids during his first journey to the Americas. He noted that they rose out of the sea and had human-like faces. Based on the location of his sighting –near Haiti in the Caribbean – it is possible that Columbus actually saw three American manatees.
