“I am contributing a stop motion animation that takes its initial inspiration from the 1886 alphabet book 'A Apple Pie' by Kate Greenway. Her book made me think about the current pie situation in the US, and how maybe we should take a step back and stop fighting for bigger slices. Maybe this pie should be composted because it's disgusting. And perhaps we can make/share a new pie together? Both the text from Greenway's book and my COVID-19 version make up the narration in the video. Chenda Cope plays 'Say Darling Say' (traditional) for the musical score, and Alison Kizu-Blair did all the video editing. Ben Simon was the tech crew. Youtube video footage from 'Nina Simone Live in Holland 1965' makes a brief appearance. The piece is dedicated to Nelson Ren Brondyke.”

“As an artist, I'm lucky to feel only minimally impacted. My work has always been about community connections rather than institutional affiliations, and my use of small-scale, low-tech, adaptable mediums has allowed me to keep working during this time with very little interruption. I've actually felt more freedom to make things than I have in a while, probably because I'm not wasting so much time applying to "art-world opportunities". Now more than ever, my creative practice gets to be about making things in ways that thrive in and support diverse, grassroots networks of badass cultural producers making-do with whatever's around.”
