During the Second World War, the archaeologist OGS Crawford undertook photography for the National Buildings Record in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. He was on hand to record the destruction wrought on Southampton, which was targeted by the Luftwaffe on scores of occasions. Gloucester Square is now (2019) the site of a car park.
