A basin with a stylized leaves decoration

Collezione Fondazione Cariparma

Collezione Fondazione Cariparma
Parma, Italy

It's a bowl on a disc-shaped foot of light and compact clay that dates back to the Samanid dynasty (819-1005), coming from the excavations of Nishapur, an important city in Iran, where this type of majolica was found in abundance. On the front we see a yellow, green, and brown decoration with lively zoomorphic motifs, where we can recognize real animals such as a fawn, in the center of the artifact, while all around, in apparent scattered order, we recognize birds, fish and various felines, probably two tigers and a leopard, with wide open jaws and folded legs, ready to pounce on the prey. On the surface we also find small and simple plant and floral decorations with a miniaturistic and calligraphic taste, which give the lively decoration particular liveliness and expressive happiness.
