“A Birch Wind” is one of the most famous pieces by this artist, and is part of a cycle of paintings that saw Valentin Sidorov awarded the USSR State Prize. Born in Tver region, Sidorov often devoted his paintings to the places he knew as a child, scenes drawn from his childhood, experience of daily village life. In “A Birch Wind”, we see the artist’s home village of Sorokopenye in Tver region.

The artist recalls the joy he felt when he was 10 years old. “That summer I had been ill and spent time in hospital. I really missed my village. Drawing helped him the longing and gave me the most amazing sense that I could draw my favourite places and that they would always be with you”.
