Bilińska was the first Polish artist who became famous in Paris – then the most important centre of art in Europe – in the second half of the 19th century. She was also the first Polish woman who attained professional education at university level. This painting is considered one of her best works. By abandoning the precision of a drawing and the exact reproduction of details in favour of the impressionistic play of spots of light and colour, the artist achieved the effect of spontaneous freshness of the impression transferred onto canvas.
