During the Civil War, Edwin Forbes was a staff artist for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. Afterwards, he developed his drawings into paintings and in 1876 also published a set of etchings, Life Studies in the Great Army, featuring a version of this painting. Later, a more extensive narrative, Thirty Years After, an Artist's Story of the Great War, included a chapter about riding out from the main camp to have Christmas dinner with some officers on picket duty postings of advance guard. Along the way Forbes' party passed groups of soldiers preparing humble holiday meals of salt pork.
