The legend around Kalkuda (a Kallukutiga or sculptor) states that during his tenure as a human being he carved the beautiful statue of Gommata (Bahubali or Gomateshwara) at Karkala. The jealous king had the left arm and right leg of the master artist cut off to prevent him from creating another sculpture of the kind.
